Why Golf in Whistler Belongs on Your Bucket List
Golf in Whistler ranks among the most scenic rounds you’ll ever play in North America. Picture glacier-fed lakes off the fairway, snow-dusted peaks behind every green, and five championship courses inside a 25-minute drive of each other.
This isn’t resort golf you politely tolerate between ski trips. These are real tracks. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus both put their names on courses here, and the locals will tell you neither one phoned it in.
The season runs roughly May through October. Tee times fill fast in July and August, so book early or play shoulder season for cooler temps and quieter fairways.
The Five Whistler Golf Courses
Five courses. Five distinct personalities.
Here’s how to pick the right one for your group.
Whistler Golf Club
Par 71 – Yardages: Blacks – 6722, Blues – 6336, Whites – 6004, Greens – 5348
Whistler’s longest serving golf course this Arnold Palmer design has seen extensive renovations since its inception in 1983.
Whistler’s purest golf course this track is carved out of a forested area on the valley floor. Narrow fairways and fast green’s give this course bite. Ball strikers will excel at this course as it’s very much a second shot track. Reasonable green fees and great junior rates make this a great place to golf with the family.
Nicklaus North Golf Course
Par 71: Gold – 6908, Blue – 6413, White – 6004, Green – 5489, Red – 4732
Whistler’s most recognized golf course is very often Nicklaus North. While much of this has to do with the famous man behind the design Jack Nicklaus this course does the famous golfer justice with it’s elegant design and playability.
The most open design of the three Whistler courses this wonderful track follows the natural contours of the Whistler Valley where it was designed. Spectacular views of the surrounding mountain’s and the only course to run alongside Whistler glacier fed Green Lake make this course a visual masterpiece. The course is always in remarkable shape and feels like a Nicklaus design 1 through 18.
Chateau Whistler Golf Course
Par 72: Gold – 6635, Blue – 6243, White – 5692, Red – 5157
What makes the Chateau Golf Course so unique from every other course on this list is the fact that it’s carved into the side of a Whistler Mountain. Constant elevation changes see the golfer climbing or descending 50 – 100 meters each hole from tee to green.
The course also offers unparalleled views of the mountain side and the Whistler Valley located several hundred meters below. As for the course itself it’s an amazing test of skill as tee-shots must be on target in order to split the carved out fairways.
Slick undulating greens offer roller coaster putts when golfers reach the putting surface. If you’re looking for unforgettable round of golf to tell your buddies about back home, this might be right up your alley.
Big Sky Golf Club
Par 72: Black – 7001, Blue – 6496, White – 6037, Green – 5208
Winner of several prestigious awards over its 20 year existence Big Sky Golf Club is one of two courses located in the nearby community of Pemberton, B.C. Pemberton is a 25 minute drive north of Whistler and offers spectacular mountain views in particular of Mountain Currie one of the most photographed stills in the area.
Big Sky Golf Course was designed to be a throwback to the classic link style golf courses of yesteryear. This wonderful course has succeeded in spades in providing golfers with a classic design we rarely see these days in the modern golf era.
Sunstone Golf Club
Par 72: Black – 6407, Blue – 6496, 5973 – 6037, Red – 5211
Pemberton’s other course Sunstone Golf Club (formerly known as the Meadows at Pemberton) has long been one of the best-kept secrets in the area. The most affordable option of the five courses this track offers is a great course at a great value.
Mini Golf in Whistler
Not every round needs a scorecard. Mini golf at Little Mountain Golf Centre sits at the base of Blackcomb in the Adventure Zone, an 18-hole winding course built for families and groups who’d rather laugh than keep score.
The Adventure Zone wraps the mini golf with bungee trampolines, a ropes course, and a luge. Plan an afternoon. The kids will not want to leave.
Disc Golf in Whistler
Want a free round? Disc golf in Whistler is one of the best-value activities in the valley, and the course is genuinely good.
Disc golf works like regular golf, only you throw a frisbee-style disc at a chain basket instead of putting a ball in a cup. Each hole has a par. Each throw counts. Simple.
You’ll need two things to play. A disc, available at Source for Sports or Katmandu Bike Shop for around $10 to $15. And shoes you don’t mind getting muddy, because the course runs through real forest terrain.
The Whistler Disc Golf Course
The Whistler Disc Golf Course has 27 holes carved into the forest behind the Whistler RV Park. Nine holes takes about an hour. Play as many loops as you want, just wave faster groups through when they catch up.
How to Get There
Park at the Whistler softball fields in Spruce Grove Park. From there it’s a 10-minute walk. You’ll pass the Scandinavian Spa, and the course entrance is signed shortly after.
Pull up Whistler Disc Park in your maps app before you go. It’ll save you a wrong turn.
Where to Stay When You Golf in Whistler
Tee times start early. Your hotel should be close enough that you’re not setting a 5 a.m. alarm to make a 9 a.m. shotgun.
Lodging Ovations runs three Creekside hotels that put you within 7 minutes of Whistler Golf Club and 10 minutes of Nicklaus North.
First Tracks Lodge suits couples and small groups chasing the luxury end. Legends Whistler handles families with room to spread out. Evolution Whistler brings a pet-friendly, wellness-focused vibe for travellers who want quieter mornings.
All three offer fully equipped kitchen suites for breakfast before tee time and a hot tub afterward.
