Great Tips to Make the Most Out of Whistler’s Fantastic Spring Skiing
Well the sunglasses are out and the neon is flashing on the slopes. That’s a sure sign that spring skiing and boarding are on their way! Here are a few tips to make sure that you have a fun-filled and safe spring season on the mountains…as it’s what many locals consider the best time of year at the resort
Don’t Show Off on the Ski-Out
The spring ski and board season is a time to enjoy the sun, and the snow at lower elevations is not necessarily optimal. While this season Whistler and Blackcomb have been blessed by the weather gods (some say that many sacrificial offerings to the god of snow Ullr have paid off) for the 2017-2018 snow season, that doesn’t mean that spring skiing and riding is a picnic from top to bottom. The Ski Out in particular is a trouble spot for injuries. People are tired after a long day of carving turns. When they get to the ski out they may let their guard down. The ski out can be where some brutal injuries occur – from twisted ankles to separated shoulders. Stay safe on the ski-out: slow down, ski and board conservatively, and you will be enjoying après sans crutches!
Layer Up for a Comfortable Day in the Alpine
Spring skiing and boarding means that you never know what the weather is going to be like up top. You could be wishing you left that Gore-Tex back in the closet – or you could be wishing you brought more layers. It is a good bet to bring a backpack to stash extra layers you don’t need. A good option is a merino t-shirt under another few more non-bulky layers that can be removed if need be. Then, if it feels like Hawaii at the Roundhouse or the Rendezvous…you are prepared!
Don’t Forget the SPF
Not everyone knows (but everybody should) that the sun hitting the snow reflects very strongly on the eyes and skin. Amplify this in the spring and you have all the right conditions for serious skin damage. Make sure you stop at one of the great pharmacies in Whistler for sunscreen of at least 30 SPF. Pay particular attention to the nose and ears.
Make Sure You Experience Spring Après!
Some say après in spring in Whistler is the absolute pinnacle of the resort’s party scene. People really let loose, and enjoy the sun, the beverages, and the festive and lively atmosphere . There’s no better time of year to get your groove on – stomping around in your ski boots!
Plan for the Snow Season Ahead
Passes for next season are already for sale, so take advantage of pre-season discounts and get those passes and edge cards locked down! Then you can feel good about planning your future skiing and boarding. All the better for snow-dreaming when the mountains close for the upcoming downhill bike season. Enjoy the white stuff while you can!
