How to Optimize Your Ski Day With the Right Gear

There are definitely things you learn the more you ski and board at Whistler and Blackcomb. One of them is to ski Whistler in the morning as it’s usually the sunnier spot. Move over to Blackcomb in the afternoon to hit Seventh Heaven. But the longer you spend time in Whistler, the more you realize that the gear you choose has a huge impact on how you enjoy your time on the slopes…or not. Here are a few tips.

Whistler Blackcomb Ski Snowboard Gear

Choose the Right Goggles

Goggle lenses are all important. In the last few years, skiers and boarders have learned that in the often snowy and grey conditions that Whistler and Blackcomb throw at us (along with those heavenly blue bird days) the right pair of goggles makes all the difference. Choosing a pair of goggles with rose-tinted lenses makes it easier to see when the light is flat. At the 2018 Olympics the US ski team has been making a splash with some very hip goggles that may be worth checking out too.

Ski Pants: A Good Pair is NOT a Second Thought

Think you can enjoy your day with any old pair of ski or snowboard pants? Wrong. You need something that has good waterproofing or else that wet snow is going to have your rear end freezing on the chair lift (and the rest of you miserable.) There are lots of options out there. You have to ask yourself how much layering you want to do, as ski pants come insulated and non-insulated (shell only). Just be sure that if you decide to jump on the new trend of stretch pants for women (coming back from the eighties when they were de rigueur) then you need to be sure there is adequate waterproofing to them as they will absorb water. Whistler Village has tons of shopping options – prices range from $200.00 to $650.00.

Whistler Ski Day Best Gear

Don’t Forget Hardgoods

A great day on the slopes isn’t complete without the perfect pair of skis or the right board. Make sure your skis are waxed and your edges are sharpened. If you are in the market for a new pair of skis, check out the friendly staff at the demo centres at the top of Whistler by the Roundhouse, and at Blackcomb next to the Rendezvous.

Ski brands at the demo centres include K2, Rossignol, Salomon, Head, Atomic and Blizzard. For women, one of the most popular skis are the Blizzard Black Pearl – a great all-mountain ski for those who enjoy groomers as well as playing in the powder on those epic days.

And Finally, Don’t Neglect Your Feet

Ski boot fitting is essential and can be done at many ski shops in the village. Ski boots are actually more important that the ski purchase! The bonus is that you can enjoy your boots for decades to come if you choose properly.

Follow these steps and you will have great days on the slopes!
