5 Can't Miss 2013 Crankworx Events
Crankworx 2013 is upon us! The largest mountain bike festival in North America is set to take place August 9 - 18. To help you prepare for the epicness that is Crankworx your friends at lodgings Ovations have put together a list of the top 5 can't miss events at this year's festival.
Narrowing all the event's down to just 5 is no easy task considering Crankworx has 60+ events planned for the festival. But thanks to our crack team at LO we have compiled our list. Kicking things off at number 1 is…
Catch the Red Bull Joyride
When: Saturday, August 17 | Where: Skiers Plaza | Time: 5 PM - 7 PM | Cost: FREE
The biggest event of Crankworx is no doubt the Red Bull Joyride. The event calls upon the best freestyle mountain bikers in the world to navigate a custom-built course meant to meld natural terrain with ginormous man-made features.
During the event, bikers navigate scream down the course choosing their own custom lines while hitting huge jumps and busting out amazing tricks. This event is a sight to behold as thousands of onlookers pack the Whistler Village to cheer on these amazing athletes.
Home bred Canucks Martin Soderstrom, Kurt Sorge, Darren Berrecloth, Brandon Semenuk & Geoff Gulevich will look to wrestle the title away from 15 other athletes and pocket a cool $50,000.If you want to witness the madness that is Joyride just make your way to Skiers Plaza on Saturday, August 17. The event kicks off at 5 PM but you better get there earlier than that if you want a decent spot.
Take part in the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival
When: Saturday, August 17 | Where: Base 2 Blackcomb Mountain | Time: 12 PM - 4 PM | Cost: FREE
What is Cheese Rolling you may ask? Well, basically you find a steep hill take a wheel of cheese and toss it down, then watch a bunch of people race down after it. A winner is crowned when the first person reaches the glorious cheese wheel.
What makes this event so fun to watch is the hilarity that ensues as people cartwheel, tumble and downright roll down the hill chasing the cheese.
Two events will be held for both men and women. Winners of the competitions not only live on in cheese folklore for years to come but even better win 2 ski/snowboard passes from Whistler Blackcomb and the beloved cheese wheel they catch.
If you're asking where and when do I sign up for this madness, you're in luck. You can register on the day of the races, August 17 at Base 2 of Blackcomb Mountain. Registration is FREE because really who would pay to do this, and is open at 11 AM. The people at the Cheese Rolling Festival advise you to get their early however as spaces fill up quickly. Also, you must be 19 years of age or older and have a valid ID proving it. *The Excalibur Gondola will begin shuttling people up to Base 2 (The site of the event) for FREE beginning at 11:30 AM. You can get there earlier by car if you want to sign up for the Cheese Rolling event.
Attend the Deep Summer Photo Challenge
When: Wednesday, August 14 | Where: Olympic Plaza | Time: 8:30 PM - 10:15 PM | Cost: $5
6 professional photographers are tasked with capturing live photos of mountain bikers in action as they navigate the terrain up and down the Sea to Sky. However in order to qualify for this event they can only use 72 hours to shoot, cut and submit their best photos to be used for a slide show that will be watched by thousands.
This is where you come in. On Wednesday, August 14 join the thousands in attendance as 6 of the best photogs in the industry reveal the photos they captured along this journey. The event will be held underneath the stars at Whistler Olympic Plaza located in the heart of the Village. Tickets for the event are only $5 for the seated area, however if you don't mind sitting far away you can catch the event in the back rows for FREE. *Tickets can be purchased at Whistler Blackcomb Guest Services Building.
Take in a FREE concert
When: August 9 - 11 | Where: Olympic Plaza | Cost: FREE
Want to attend a FREE concert? Who doesn't! During Crankworx, Bud Light will be throwing a FREE concert series at Whistler Olympic Park. The concerts will run from August 9 - 11 and feature the following artists on the following days.

Party on down at the Captain Morgan's Shipwreck Party
When: Thursday, August 14 | Where: GLC | Time: 10 PM - 1A M | Cost: TBA
Pro Mountain Bike Rider Jordie Lunn and his DJ sidekick Hans Vans Biets team up to host one of the biggest parties at Crankworx. Jordie Lunn's Shipwrecked Party is sponsored by Captain Morgan, RockShox and Pinkbike which means that along with being a wicked good time they'll be FREE giveaways.
Keeping it real with the Captain entrants are encouraged to dress up in pirate attire for the night. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.
The party takes place at the GLC conveniently located right beside all of the Crankworx action and events. If you want to be a real party animal you can catch the Teva Best Trick Showdown earlier in the evening (4 PM - 6 PM) on the GLC balcony and party right through to shipwrecked at 10 PM. This is going to be a big event so get you pirate swag ready and make sure you're there good and early if you want to get in.
