Crankworx Top 5 Must Do's
Crankworx 2014 is upon us! The largest mountain bike festival in North America is taking place August 8 - 17. To help you prepare for the epicness that is Crankworx your friends at Lodgings Ovations have put together a list of the top 5 must do’s at this year's festival. Narrowing all the event's down to just 5 is no easy task considering Crankworx has 60+ events planned for the festival. LO's list of top 5 must do's at Crankworx 2014 kick off with number 5:
#5 – Cruise the Village Stroll
When: August 8 – 17| Where: Whistler Village | Cost: FREE
During these 10 days the atmosphere in the Village is like no other time of year in whistler. As you cruise the village stroll samples of Beef Jerky, Sunglasses and much much more come from all different directions. Take a stroll and take in all the action.
#4 – Attend the GoPro Dirt Diaries
When: Tues, Aug 12 | Where: Olympic Plaza | Time: 8:30PM – 10:00PM | Cost: FREE
For the GoPro Dirt Diaries Riders assemble a team of up to six people, including film crew, editors and athletes, they have two months to film, shoot and edit a five minute video that tells their own unique story. Mountain bikers and filmers have this opportunity to distinguish themselves with the shots they get and the lines they ride, it puts the creative power into their hands. Judging is based on storyline substances, videography, riding and editing.
#3 - Take part in the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival
When: Sat, Aug 16 | Where: Base 2 - Blackcomb Mtn | Time: 12PM - 4PM | Cost: FREE
What is Cheese Rolling you may ask? Well basically you find a steep hill take a wheel of cheese and toss it down, then watch a bunch of people race down after it. A winner is crowned when the first person reaches the glorious cheese wheel.
What makes this event so fun to watch is the hilarity that ensues as people cartwheel, tumble and downright roll down the hill chasing the cheese. Two events will be held for both men and women. Winners of the competitions not only live on in cheese folklore for years to come but even better win 2 ski/snowboard passes from Whistler Blackcomb and the beloved cheese wheel they catch.
If you're asking when and where I sign up for this madness then you're in luck. You can register on the day of the races, August 16 at Base 2 of Blackcomb Mountain. Registration is FREE and is open at 11AM. The people at the Cheese Rolling Festival advise you to get their early however as spaces fill up quickly. Also you must be 19 years of age or older and have a valid ID proving it. *The Excalibur Gondola will begin shuttling people up to Base 2 (The site of the event) for FREE beginning at 11:30AM or you can get there by car.
#2 - Attend the Deep Summer Photo Challenge
When: Wed, Aug 13 | Where: Olympic Plaza | Time: 8:30PM - 10:15PM | Cost: FREE
Six professional photographers are tasked with capturing live photos of mountain bikers in action as they navigate the terrain up and down the Sea to Sky, from Squamish to Pemberton. They have 72 hours to shoot, cut and submit their best photos to be used for a slide show that will be watched by thousands.
On Wednesday, August 13 join the thousands in attendance as 6 of the best photographers in the industry reveal the photos they captured along this journey. The event will be held underneath the stars at Whistler Olympic Plaza located in the heart of the Village. Tickets for the event are only $7 for the seated area, however if you don't mind sitting far away you can catch the event in the back rows for FREE. *Tickets can be purchased at Whistler Blackcomb Guest Services Building.
#1 - Catch the Red Bull Joyride
When: Sat, Aug 16 | Where: Skiers Plaza | Time: 4:30PM - 7PM | Cost: FREE
The Redbull joyride is without a doubt the biggest event of Crankworx. Elements of slopestyle, dirt jump and North Shore-style mountain biking, The event calls upon the best free-style mountain bikers in the world to navigate a custom-built course meant to meld natural terrain with ginormous man made features.
During the event bikers navigate down the course choosing their own custom lines while hitting huge jumps and busting out amazing tricks. This event is a sight to behold as thousands of on-lookers pack the Whistler Village to cheer on these amazing athletes.
Home bred canucks Brandon Semenuk, Anthony Messere, Darren Berrecloth, Logan Peat, Brett Rheeder & Geoff Gulevich look to wrestle the title away from 14 other athletes. If you want to witness the madness that is Joyride make your way to Skiers Plaza on Saturday, August 16. The event kicks off at 4:30PM but you better get there earlier than that if you want a decent spot.
